Nicole Holofcener films are no where near mainstream, yet they are more real, genuinely funny and true to life than any blockbuster of late. Her films Walking and Talking (1996) and recently released Lovely and Amazing are slightly autobiographical in that Nicole writes about true experiences, explores them and alters them for dramatic purposes.
Nicole grew up in New York and Los Angeles in a creative family environment. Her mother a set decorator, her father a stage-actor and her stepfather a film producer. She first became interested in directing film where she studied filmmaking at Columbia Graduate School. There she received recognition for her short film, It’s Richard I love. Then wrote and directed another short film, Angry.
Her stepfather, Charles Joffe, helped her get her first job in the business. As a production assistant on a Woody Allen film, A Midsummer Night’s Sex, which Charles was producing. She worked on another Woody Allen film, Hannah and Her Sisters, where she apprenticed in the editing department handling the dailies, getting coffee but not cutting film. She never got within 30 feet of the celebrated director.
