Getting to Know More about Being Green with Woody Harrelson

September 25th 2009 15:01

Gill Pringle of The UK Times wrote an article about his chat with Woody Harrelson. They talked Woody’s green-lifestyle. Woody opened up about his concerns in keeping the environment clean, adjusting his lifestyle to be greener. After reading the article, I felt for the first time I knew who Woody Harrelson was. I had a complete misconception of him as a radical who did crazy and odd things.

On the contrary, he seems to have both feet on the ground and is a man with integrity, which is heartening compared to what I read in the magazines about celebrities.

The reason I am bringing up Pringle’s article is that it goes into details about Harrelson’s 2003 all-electric Rav4, which he loves driving and plugs it into an outlet to refuel. The model was discontinued but he still drives his. He says the car is his most prized possession.

Nowadays his Rav4 is in Los Angeles but when he is in Hawaii he drives a VW Beetle that runs on biodiesel, a modified vegetable oil or animal fat.

His Hawaii home is entirely off-grid, which means he generates his own solar power. It appears that, everyone in his neighborhood is on solar power, too. Nobody in the neighbor ever had power lines. Harrelson told Pringle that the neighborhood was solar powered before he moved in. I have a feeling that is why he moved in to the neighborhood.

Harrelson seems more than just run of the mill environmental celebrity-dude. He’s even a raw-food, vegan fanatic who at one time scaled the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to protest against deforestation.

I don’t think I’d scale the Golden Gate Bridge to protest deforestation. I am sure there are other ways to protest deforestation that isn’t so scary. I am doing my part in being environmentally conscious. I hope Pringle’s article with Woody about the environment increases the awareness of those who read it because if we all did something green every day, the environment would improve.
