Taking a look at the Chinese culture during the 19th century through the eyes of Lily (Bingbing Li) and Snow Flower (Gianna Jun) we observe a Laotong friendship. A friendship that is a lifelong journey of a ever-lasting bond between two women. They need each other as friends and companions as a comfort to their hard lives.
Surrounded by civil unrest and blatant gender discrimination of the age, the two Chinese women deal with life’s sufferings together until they are forced apart by traditional marriage and childbirth. Still, being sworn to sisterhood, they continue to communicate through the secret Chinese language of nushu, concealing their stories and messages within the folds of delicate silk fans.
One could describe this friendship as “relationship made by choice for the purpose of emotional companionship and eternal fidelity.” Acting on this quote, and to praise widely the release of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan on Blu-ray and DVD this November, the studio has offered a few Chinese proverbs to live by, embracing, “A bird does not sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song” and, “Deep doubts, deep wisdom, small doubts, little wisdom.”
