Movie Roar - Hear the Movies Roar!

Rating Movies is All About Sex

December 5th 2010 02:51

Midnight Cowboy is the only X-rated movie that won an Academy Award for Best Picture. Today, with some editing the movie could easily receive an R rating.

Sex and movies go together like milk and butter when it comes to the ratings of the Motion Picture Assn. of America. In a recent article in the LA Time, it was stated that “whether a film gets an NC-17, R or PG-13 can be a mystifying process.

The most recent situation is the NC-17 given to Blue Valentine because of what the Weinstein Co. studio said is a steamy sex scene involving actors Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

However, another new film, Black Swan includes the same act between two women, played by Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, and received a less-restrictive R rating.

Ratings have been an issue through movie history and the LA Times offers a photo gallery of the most prominent movie with controversial ratings. You can click here to see the article and photos.

The MPAA are a confused bunch of mostly conservatives. Movies like Lethal Weapon get a lower censorship rating despite the extreme violence, and high body count, but because there is very little blood shown on screen. A horror movie featuring a decapitation will be censored according to how high the blood jets, a metre is too high, but a few spurts is okay. Full-frontal nudity of a woman is okay, but will earn a hard-R, but one can only glimpse a man's penis if he is getting out of a shower or bath. The word "fuck" immediately earns you an R. If you take the Lord's name in vain, you are slapped with an R.
The horror fans cried out for a rating for violence the equivalent of an X, and got the NC-17, which didn't help matters at all. Cinemas still wouldn't book an NC-17 movie. It's the kiss of death.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess it's unfortunate for Blue Valentine being slapped with an NC-17 rating.
