Shock Masters of the Cinema by documentary filmmaker Loris Curci is full of Q and A interviews with the world’s greatest horror filmmakers and celebrities. The 151-page book will fascinate the hard core, penchant horror film aficionado. Those who have the passion and drive to aspire to write, direct or produce a horror film should enjoy these brief interviews.
If you are looking for insider tips or secret formulas, you won’t find them in this book. But, you will get a feel for the importance of using the best of special effects, the benefits of using a small budget or the trouble with failing to overcome censors.
The 25 interviews are intermitted with over a hundred black and white photographs of each filmmaker’s work. Any ardent horror film fan would buy this book just for the photographs.
The interviews are short and to the point. There are five interviews of the bundle that impressed me the most. Writer Ramsey Campbell, best know for Ancient Images, offers sound information about writing horror novels, film and short stories. A true horror writer through and through. Wes Craven, Nightmare on Elm Street, gives you the understanding of working on low-budget to big-budget films. John Carpenter, Halloween, The Thing, gives his honest opinion on sequels and remakes. Kenneth Branagh, Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, conveys his filmmaking intellect in an awe-inspiring way. Then, classic horror filmmaker George Romero, Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, is the best interview of all. Romero is a writer, too. He was one of the many candidates for The Mummy. For some unknown reason, he turn it down.
