Bad Lieutenant Movie Trailer is Wicked
October 9th 2009 16:21
Nicolas Cage is awesome in this movie trailer. He's wicked and Herzog even gave room for justification or reasons for the lieutenant's demise. This movie will rock at the box office – it looks great. Yikes! Bad Lieutenant opens in theaters November 20, 2009.

Nic Cage's career is in tatters as far as I'm concerned. He hasn't made a decent flick in years and years. His early career was superb.
I feel for Abel Ferrara. From the trailer this looks to do the original a dreadful injustice (pun unintended), there seems to be no style or atmosphere whatsoever, and none of the original's slow burn ferocity or resonance.
Hell, I might be completely off-track here, cos a trailer doesn't always do a movie justice, and I am a fan of much of Herzog's stuff, but this really doesn't look good.
And as for Cage's hair, the less said the better ...

There are some parts of this trailer I do like, some I feel uncomfortable about.

I'm very curious, what do you actually like of the trailer? And what do you find uncomfortable?
I don't see anything I've not seen before (but better) ... and if Cage is going to do another of his "crazy" performances, he'll need to outperform his own self in Kiss of Death or Vampire's Kiss

I like his work while going through the the agony of back pain and prescription drug abuse. I like seeing his struggle with that in the trailer.
I feel uncomfortable with is demise and over indulgence with drugs, danger and sex.

In the original the cop is struggling with his own religious guilt (Catholicism, a re-occurring theme for the director Abel Ferrara), his own morality, his own vices; which include gambling and sexual harassment, as well as coke and heroin addiction. The cop's personal hell is juxtaposed with his outer hell which centres around the rape of a nun and how the nun has forgiven her assailants which the cop can't understand (he can barely hold up his job!) ...
The film's themes are murky and subversive and Ferrara takes no prisoners. I can't see this remake being anywhere near as dangerous or as powerful as Ferrara's searing vision of ruined morality and the desperate pursuit for salvation. However Herzog has delivered some powerful movies in his career, perhaps he will surprise me.
If you're not made uncomfortable by this movie (the remake that is) then Herzog has failed.

Now, I am going off the subjects, but remakes are becoming gimmicks not factuals.

I believe I heard about Herzog's response to Ferrara -- it did seem off the cuff.

Birdy and Vampire's Kiss are my absolute faves, followed by Leaving Las Vegas and Face/Off.
Others would be Wild at Heart, Red Rock West, and Raising Arizona.
These days it seems he's adopted Michael Caine's approach and stars in anything regardless of its quality, simply because it's work and he demands an extraordinary fee (up around the $20 million mark for each movie!!!)

Raising Arizona is more of a Coen Brother's film. I almost put down Wild at Heart.
